The speaker is Samuel Ruiz Garcia, Retired Bishop of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.

Bishop Ruiz, internationally renowned for his defense of the human rights of indigenous people and the poor, was the mediator between the Mexican government and the Zapatista National Liberation Assembly in Chiapas. He won the 1997 Martin Ennals Award "in recognition of his courageous and innovative approaches to combat human rights violations in Mexico," as well as the 2000 International Simon Bolivar Prize from UNESCO.
